The
seductive culture of New Orleans makes it one of the most enticing tourist
destinations on the planet. The city is situated along the Mississippi River,
less than 100 miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of America’s
most prominent seaports and is home to nearly 500,000 residents. Often referred
to as “Crescent City,” due to its conformity to a bend in the river, New
Orleans covers a bit more than 350 square miles, half of which is under water.
Nevertheless, it is the extravagant nightlife (especially in the French
Quarter), the luxurious neighborhoods and renowned cuisine, the romantic
architecture, the mystic voodoo culture, and the famed music scene that
altogether bring so many people to the Big Easy. Don't
forget about America's wildest party - Mardi Gras - which takes place here every
year just before Lent.
